F.A.Q.s
What made you choose a career as a UX Strategist, Researcher and Interaction Designer?
My journey in UX has been fueled by a deep passion for both strategy and research, where advocating for users and crafting meaningful experiences is at the heart of everything I do. Over the past 14+ years, I’ve had the privilege of working across diverse projects in UX strategy, research, interaction design and UI design. While I began my career as a product designer, I soon realized that my true calling lay in uncovering the deeper insights and product strategy, driving development and understanding the intricacies of human behavior, emotions, and challenges.
What excites me most about UX is the opportunity to delve into the human experience, discovering the underlying motivations, needs, and delights that shape how people interact with products. Through meticulous holistic design approach, I am dedicated to creating products and experiences that are not only intuitive and accessible but also truly resonate with users.
Can you describe your approach to conducting user research?
My user research approach combines Design Thinking, Human-Centered Design, and Agile methodologies, focusing on empathy, collaboration, iteration, and continuous improvement. I prioritize understanding user needs, motivations, and pain points through in-depth research methods like interviews, surveys, and ethnographic observation. These insights guide informed design decisions, validate assumptions, and align with stakeholder expectations and business goals. I collaborate with cross-functional teams to communicate findings, ideate, and prototype solutions, fostering creativity and diverse perspectives. By applying an iterative approach throughout development, I ensure the final product effectively meets user needs and achieves excellence within time and budget constraints.
And how is your approach when developing UX design assets?
When developing UX design assets, my approach is grounded in a user-centered, iterative process that combines thorough research, strategic thinking, and collaborative design. These insights inform the creation of personas, user journeys, and empathy maps that guide the design process. I then translate these insights into wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups, ensuring each design element aligns with user expectations and enhances usability.
I leverage Design Thinking and Agile methodologies, which allow for rapid iteration and continuous feedback. By fostering collaboration with cross-functional teams, including developers, product managers, and stakeholders, I ensure that the design assets are not only visually engaging but also technically feasible and aligned with business goals. I continually test and refine assets based on user feedback, ensuring the final product delivers an intuitive, seamless, and delightful user experience.
What methods and tools do you prefer for gathering and test user data?
When it comes to gathering qualitative data in user research for product, software, and service development, I prioritize a combination of methods and tools that yield comprehensive insights into user behavior and preferences. Some of the most efficient methods I prefer include In-depth On-site Interviews, Ethnographic Observation, Task Analysis, User Journey Mapping, and Usability Testing. Other techniques also include A/B Testing, Kano Analysis, Card Sorting, and Remote Tracking and Monitoring, Surveys and questionnaires.
In terms of tools, I utilize a variety of platforms and software to streamline the research process and analyze qualitative data effectively including UserTesting, Qualtrics, Zoom or MS Teams. For analysis, and to promote communication and collaboration I enjoy working with MS Teams, Miro, OneNote, and Prezi or PowerPoint. For prototyping tools, I am proficient in Figma and Sketch and comfortable with Adobe XD and Axure.
How do you stay updated on industry trends and advancements in UX research?
Staying updated on industry trends and advancements in UX research is crucial to remain at the forefront of innovation and excellence. To achieve this, I employ a multifaceted approach that encompasses various sources of information and opportunities for continuous learning, such as: Regularly read industry publications such as UX Magazine, Nielsen Norman Group, and Smashing Magazine to stay informed about trends forecasts and emerging technologies, attend workshops, webinars, and online courses offered by organizations like Interaction Design Foundation and UX Design Institute to expand knowledge and skillset, stay connected with industry experts and thought leaders through networking events, conferences, and professional societies, engage in discussions, share experiences, and exchange ideas with peers to stay informed about industry trends and foster a collaborative community, tune into podcasts and webcasts hosted by leading UX practitioners and researchers for valuable insights, tips, and real-world case studies.
What’s your experience working remotely?
My experience working remotely has been incredibly rewarding and productive, particularly since transitioning to remote work in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges posed by remote work, I have adapted seamlessly and was able to contribute significantly to product development performance increase, with a notable 33% during this period. Throughout my time working remotely, I have consistently exceeded expectations and was recognized by the CEO as one of the company’s top performers in 2022. This achievement underscores my commitment to delivering exceptional results regardless of the work environment, showcasing my adaptability, resilience, and dedication to success, and inspiring confidence and trust from my leadership. Despite the physical distance, I have cultivated an extensive network of collaborators and peers through virtual channels. Leveraging technology and effective communication strategies, I have fostered meaningful connections with team members, stakeholders, and industry professionals, allowing me to collaborate effectively and drive projects forward.
How do you adapt and apply your knowledge to an industry where you have no experience in, such as gaming, banking, or medical?
When entering a new and unfamiliar industry, I adapt by leveraging my research-driven approach and my core UX design principles—empathy, research, and iteration—while immersing myself in the specific needs and nuances of that industry. I begin by conducting extensive research to understand the unique challenges, regulations, and user behaviors within the field. Collaborating with industry experts, I quickly acquire domain-specific knowledge, ensuring that my design approach is relevant and impactful. This flexibility allows me to apply my expertise effectively across diverse sectors, delivering tailored solutions that resonate with users. In fact, when I first started working with boats, that area was completely knew and strange to me. That didn’t prevent me from being recognized by the CEO as a company top performer on my second year of employment.
